Description

The Lead Strings Instructor for the CSA is responsible for giving leadership and vision for the overall area of CSA
strings (violin, viola, and cello) study, including maintaining a teaching studio and arranging for all aspects of
the CSA’s string and Suzuki program.



Requirements

Instruction:

  1. Maintain a full teaching studio in the Community School of the Arts area of the Goshen College Music
    Center, teaching 24 to 26 hours of private or group string lessons weekly through the two 15-week
    semesters of the CSA school year (beginning in August and January). The age range of students is
    generally age 7 through high school, and may also include adults who are not GC students.
  2. Teach a total of 75 - 85 hours of private lessons over the summer session (June through August), dates
    to be determined by instructor.
  3. Communicate with students and parents on studio expectations, schedules, CSA policies and other
    relevant information.

Administrative:

  1. Establish studio policies for all strings area, ensuring quality and consistency of program.
  2. In coordination with CSA Director, arrange for independently contracted teachers, including GC string
    pedagogy students, to teach additional CSA students as there is need. Determine student placement
    with these teachers and arrange payment with CSA Director.
  3. Interview all potential new students applying to the strings program and determine final student roster
    with input of the CSA director. Maintain waiting list and communication in regards to CSA string
    inquiries.
  4. Communicate with string instructors to maintain CSA policies and standards, ensuring that all students
    are succeeding in their placements.

Other Duties:

  1. Direct bi-weekly Suzuki classes (6 classes and 1 performance per semester). Classes will be determined
    by student level, with director’s input, and will follow the Suzuki books. When applicable, classes will be
    split according to instrument (violin/viola).
  2. Direct bi-weekly Allegro Beginning Strings Ensemble (6-7 rehearsals and 1 performance per semester) for students in grades 2-5.
  3. Teach occasional group classes and masterclasses as necessary. Arrange for special events for String program (Suzuki guest teachers, etc.).
  4. Oversee CSA inventory of string instruments and loans or rentals of these instruments to CSA students and scholarship families.
  5. Work with the recruiting of string candidates in area high schools.
